I have called several people today and ended up getting answering machines. It struck me that on every single on of these machines people have these profoundly sing songy voices. Why do we do that? It’s almost unavoidable. We don’t talk like that in in regular conversation. So, why do we do it on answering machines? Even if we don’t do it we spend a great deal of time trying and energy trying to not do it.
